Five White Males, 1994.
My studio, Brooklyn, USA.
It has been common practice to photograph (or paint) female nudes, mainly by male artists. Male nudes photographed by a woman, not so much. On a cold morning I photographed these friends from above, standing high on a ladder, while they were laying on my studio floor. At first I had them printed life-size and had the backgrounds painted light blue/white so the figures stood out. This is how I exhibited them at White Columns in the West Village in NYC. I overheard a discussion, in which people were trying to guess if the photographer had been a male or a female, since the name Hanneke could not be deciphered as female or male in the English language.
