Work I made before, during and right after art school. I was thinking about and experimenting with how I could use photography to best suite my ideas about life, society and photography’s place within. My ideas about complexity, patterns and connectivity started to develop and find a place in my work. In this time most of my works was made up of multiple images incorporated in 3D objects or 3D wall installations.

It never really made sense to me why one would want to have a dog in an urban environment. This project got exhibited through a gallery during a fund-raising event at Alice Tully Hall in New York.
Traces of a Western Civilization, 1990.

This installation combines nine 40x60cm "tiles" of NYC street details, which show repairs, wires, gum, paint, cement footprints etc.. The side panels show people underground, in the subway of 33rd Street and Park Avenue, where a lot of the pipes and wiring was visible. One side is all males. The other side is all females. The wall installation you see here measures about 3m wide x 2m high. It was exhibited in a show called Social Studies/Public Monuments at the Woodstock Center of Photography and published in their quarterly publication. All prints are analogue sepia toned gelatin silver prints.

With these works I started to experiment with bringing individual photographs together in 3d installation-like works. I seek out patterns in various photographic series, which communicate with each other in installations. A lot of these works were produced in the early 1990s and exhibited during that decade.

I rephotographed family photos from various New Yorkers from different cultural backgrounds, ranging from South America to South East Asia. Here you see a few of the display boxes, with fabrics appropriate for each chosen photo. I intended to make 99 of these display cases for a group exhibition.

In the late 1980s I started my career as an artist making 3D wall installations and standing objects displaying photographs. I was fascinated by people posing in front of a camera, by photos as family mementos, by photographs supposedly being precious, and by the representation of "reality."
